How To Do The Moss Stitch Crochet? [Explained With Picture In Easy Steps]
Moss stitch crochet combines basic techniques and is enjoyable due to its repeating feature. Regardless of its simplicity, you can work moss stitch crochet in many different ways.
However, there are three main ways to do it. Others are modifications by some crocheters for particular projects, or you can also try to modify some. Let’s learn how to do moss stitch crochet in all these three ways:
The three main ways are-
- Moss Stitch Crochet In Row By Row
- Corner To Corner Moss Stitch Crochet (C2C Moss Stitch Crochet)
- Moss Stitch Crochet In Round
Method 1: Moss Stitch Crochet In Row By Row
Abbreviations:
- Ch = Chain
- Sk = Skip
- Sc = Single Crochet
- Ch1sp = Chain 1 space
Step 1: Make A Foundation Chain:
For the foundation, make a chain in even number (such as, ch 20).
Step 2: Work Row 1:
- Find the ch 4 from your crochet hook and ch 1 in that chain.
- You have skipped three chains from the hook to work a ch 1 in the fourth chain. These three chains are your one sc and one ch1sp.
- Now, skip one chain.
- Now, work one sc and do a ch 1 in the next chain.
- Now, continue doing instructions 3 and 4 on step 2 till you reach the end of your first row. Remember, do not ch-1 in your next chain after working the last sc in your first row. You can change the color at this stage by introducing a new color for the second row.
Tips: Remember, as we skipped one chain before each sc, there will only be half the number of sc of the chains, i.e. if your foundation had 20 chains, the sc on row 1 will be 10.
Step 3: Work Row 2
- Turn your work and ch 2. At this stage, you can use the current yarn or a new color of yarn. This is your one sc and one ch1sp for the second row.
- Now, find your first ch1sp.
- Now, do one sc and ch 1 in that space.
- Find the next ch1sp.
- In that space, work one sc and ch 1.
- Now, continue working instruction 9 and 10 of step 3 . When you reach to the last sc, do not work it like the others. Instead, do it from the ch 3 from row 1.
- And like the end of the row 1, do not ch 1.
Note: In this step, your final stitch count will be the same number of the stitches on the first row.
Step 4: Work Row 3
- Turn the work And pull your crochet hook through the last two stitches with either the current yarn or a new color.
- Now, do a ch 2. It is the first one sc and one ch1sp for your row 3.
- Find the first ch1sp in the row 3.
- Now, to complete the row 3, continue doing one sc and one ch 1 in every ch1sp till you reach the last stitch.
- Now, find the chain 2 in the previous row. It is also called the begging chain 2.
- Now, do one sc in that chain. Remember, do not work ch 1 after the sc.
Note: For row 3, your final stitch count will be the same number of the stitch on the row 1 and row 2.
Step 5: Work the Rest of the Rows
- Now, for the rest of the rows, follow all the instructions on step 4 (work row 3). And do not forget to turn the work after each row and do not ch 1 after the last sc.

Step 1: Make The Starting Chain
- Grab your yarn and the recommended size crochet hook. Now, work ch 3.
Step 2: Work Row 1
Now, find the third stitch from the crochet hook and work one stitch in that stitch. Turn in your work and do ch 3. After you have made ch 3, you will see a ch3sp.
Step 3: Work Row 2
Now, find the ch3sp as shown in the previous picture. Do a single crochet. Now, do one ch1 and sc in the same stitch.
Turn the work and chain 3. In the picture below, the ch1sp for this stitch has been marked with an arrow to ensure you find it for the next row.
Step 4: Work Row 3 And Row 4
Find your first ch1sp, as shown in the picture above. Work one sc and ch 1 in that space. Now, repeat the instructions in row 2: do one sc, chain one, and then again one sc in the ch3sp.
Now, turn your work and chain 3. Again, work one sc and ch 1 in ch1sp. Remember to do this for all of the remaining ch1sp. When you reach the last stitch, work one sc in the ch3sp after the sc and ch1. The extra sc increases the row. All of the spaces that you will do the sc and ch 1 are highlighted in the picture below. Take a look.
Step 5: Work The Rest Of The Half of The Project
Now, follow the step 4 instructions and continue until you reach the desired length of your project (ch 3, sc, and ch1 in all of the ch1sp, then do one sc, ch 1, and again one sc in ch3sp for the last stitch).
Step 6: Work The Last Corner Of Half Of The Project
When you reach the last stitch of the previous row, do not work the usual single crochet, ch 1 and single crochet in the sh3sp. Instead, do a single crochet and a half double crochet. It will leave you with a perfect sharp corner.
Step 7: Work The Rest Half Of The Project
- For the other half of your dishcloth, you will gradually decrease the number of stitches. Work a ch 2. Skip 2 stitched and in the first ch1sp, do an hdc and work on a sc, ch 1, sc.
- Now, for all of the ch1sp, you need to do one sc and ch1.
- For the last stitch of the deceasing row 1, work only one sp and not the ch 1.
- Work a sc in the ch3sp as shown in the picture.
- Now, turn the work and do a ch2. Skip 2 stitches and do a sc and ch1 in the first ch1sp. Continue doing the sc and ch1 for all of the remaining ch1sp.
At the end of the row, do a sc in the ch1sp and instead of doing ch 1, do another sc in the ch2sp
- Continue repeating the instruction 5 of step 7 till you reach the second last row of the rest half of the dishcloth.
- For the second last row, you will notice only three sc left. Now, do a ch2 and a sc, ch 1 in the first ch1sp. Then, do only one sc in the sh2sp, do not work any ch 1.
