To close the side, work between the first and second double crochets of each row. Remember, the starting chain-3 in each row counts as a double crochet.

Chain 2, then single crochet in the same stitch as the last one from the bottom edge. Going through both layers, make 2 single crochets in each of the first 10 rows. Then, working only in the back layer, make 2 single crochets in each of the next 9 rows (see Photos 3 and 4). Fasten off and weave in the yarn ends. You should have 39 single crochets.

Step 6: Ammonite Closure

Row 1: 

Make a magic ring. Chain 1 (this doesn’t count as a stitch). Work 1 half double crochet and then 11 double crochets into the ring. You should have 12 stitches total — 1 hdc and 11 dc.

Row 2: 

Work 2 double crochets into the next stitch. Then, make 2 back post double crochets around each of the remaining 11 stitches. You should have 24 stitches in total — 2 dc and 22 BPdc.

Row 3: 

Work 2 back post double crochets around the next stitch, then 1 back post double crochet around the following stitch. Do this sequence twice.

Next, you’ll work 2 back post treble crochets around the next stitch, then 1 back post treble crochet around the subsequent stitch. Repeat this sequence ten times.

At this point, you should have a total of 36 stitches: 6 back post double crochets and 30 back post treble crochets.

Row 4: 

Repeat this sequence seven times: make 2 back post double treble crochets around the next stitch, then 1 back post double treble crochet around the next stitch.

Then repeat this next sequence three times: make 2 back post triple treble crochets around the next stitch, then 1 back post triple treble crochet around the next stitch.
