To make the crochet roses, you will need red or pink yarn, a crochet hook (I’ll be using a 5.5-millimeter hook), scissors, and a sewing needle. The stitches we will be using are the slip stitch, chain, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet.

Before I started, I made a rose but didn’t connect it, so it still has all of the tails. This helps you understand how we will be making the rose. At first glance, it looks pretty difficult, but it’s just one long curly strip of crochet.

Petal Sections:

• Large petals (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) using double crochet
• Medium-sized petals (1, 2, 3, 4) using half double crochet
• Small petals (1, 2, 3) using single crochet

Here are the detailed step-by-step instructions to crochet a rose pattern:

Step 1: Make a Slip Knot

Insert your crochet hook and tighten the string. Make a chain of 26. To chain, have your hook facing away from you, put it on the left side of the string, yarn over, and pull through. Continue until you have 26 chains.

Step 2: Single Crochet Row

Skip the first stitch and do a single crochet into the second. Skip one, insert into the second chain, yarn over, come out so you have two loops on the hook, yarn over, and pull through two. Continue until you have 25 single crochets.

Yarn over and pull through the last two. Do four more double crochets using the same stitch? Slip the stitch into the next stitch. Repeat until you have five large petals.

Yarn over, insert into the next stitch, yarn over, come out so you have three loops on the hook, yarn over, and pull through all three. Repeat until you have five half-double crochets. Slip the stitch into the next stitch. Continue in the same pattern.

Insert, yarn over, come out so you have two loops on the hook, yarn over, and pull through both. Do five into the same stitch, then slip the stitch into the next. Continue until you have three small petals.

• Chain one and pull until you have about ten inches. Use scissors to cut it, then pull tight.
• Sew it together. Start by sewing the first tail in and cut the excess off.
• Take the long tail and put it through the sewing needle. From the small petals the way you want them to look and put the needle through one of the petals to get to the back where we will be sewing. Sew the rose together by sewing only through the single crochet, which is the base for our petals.
• Flip the rose over, rearrange the petals to your liking, and continue sewing, making sure to sew all the way around the rose and not just in one particular area. Repeat by flipping over the rose and arranging the final petals.
• If there is a flap from one of the large petals, sew it to one of the medium petals to make sure it’s attached.
• Finally, weave in the ends by sewing through one of the petals and cutting off any leftover yarn.

We just want it to flow nicely loosely and freely when you’re crocheting.

I’m just gonna go ahead and create a slip knot really quick so I can demonstrate this for you.

Tips 3: Holding Your Yarn

This is how you should hold your yarn with your non-dominant hand. It should feel normal and comfortable to you. 

Then, choose one or two ways that you want to try and that you think will be easy for you. It goes over my ring finger, under my middle finger, and back over my pointer finger. 

This is how I hold my yarn. My little finger can help me move the yarn where I want it to go.

Tips 4: Using Your Dominant Hand

Now that you’ve decided how you want to hold your yarn, use your dominant hand to pull on it. Most likely, you’ll be crocheting a little too loosely if your yarn is pulling apart quickly. You might be knitting too tightly if you can’t get your yarn to go through.

When you pull on that yarn, it should look like this: it should move easily, but not just slide through, and I shouldn’t have to work hard to pull on it. I hope that makes sense. 

Do that again after changing the way you hold your yarn in your less-used hand if you’re still having trouble. 

Some crocheting techniques have the loop go around your finger or pinky. If that works for you, great! But if the loop around your pinky gets caught and stops you from crocheting easily, try something different. 

You could go this way and have it flow over your pinky instead of around it. That would work a little better. 

This is what you find most useful and comfortable for knitting. This is why I want to give you more than one choice: everyone is different and will teach you something different. 

It’s possible for things that work for me to not work for you, and you can get into bad habits. 

If you’re new to crocheting or just want to change things up, I want you to get into a good habit that helps you crochet with nice, even tension. That way, when you’re done, your projects will look great.

Some mistakes that might be made are the following: At the beginning of my crochet journey, I did this a lot, and one of my projects was only half as big as it was meant to be. 

As I worked on my shawl, I thought it would be very long and fit over my shoulders, but when I was done, it was probably the right size for a five- or six-year-old. 

After each stitch, I pulled tight. It shows how I would start with a stitch based on the size of the hook and then pull it tight to make it very small. 

This messed up my size and made it too small.

Do not do that. Instead, the size of your hook should tell you how big your stitches should be. There should be a small hole in the line, and your hook should be able to easily pass through it. 

Your tension is probably right if the space around the hook is the same size as the hook itself.
