What Is A Cross Stitch Pattern?
The cross stitch pattern is an embroidery sewing technique that shows details of the design by forming a unique “x” shape for each stitch. These stitches highlight the colorfulness and transfer complex images into simple yet delicate motifs. So, regardless of your skill level, you can easily complete a cross-stitch pattern.
Necessary Supplies To Work The Cross-Stitch Patterns
Cross-stitch patterns are easy to work with and do not require many supplies. With this stitch, let’s examine the standard supplies needed to create beautiful and meaningful patterns:
Supplies Names | Functions |
---|---|
Fabric | To make a perfect cross-stitch pattern, we usually use the Aida fabric. However, if you do not have the Aida fabric, you can use linen or crochet work. But remember, regardless of the fabric, it should have evenly spaced holes to make the stitching easier. |
Threads | Use any embroidery threads in different colors that suit your taste and the cross-stitch pattern. |
Needles | We will use the tapestry needle to make a beautiful cross-stitch pattern. The most common size used for this is 24 or 26. |
Pattern | Before starting to stitch, make sure you have a hard copy of the pattern. You can use any printed, digital, or drawing pattern. |
Hoop or Frame | Use a small embroidery hoop or frame to ensure the fabric is taut when making the pattern. |
Scissors | Use small and sharp scissors to cut the thread after making the cross-stitch pattern. |
Markers (optional) | If you are new or struggling to remember the starting point or any important point during the stitching, use fabric markers or pens to mark it. |

How to Make A Cross-Stitch Pattern?
Making a cross-stitch pattern is pretty easy. However, as a beginner, you need to remember some rules and follow them meticulously to succeed in making the pattern properly. Here, I have noted down those rules in a few steps. Take a look and remember to follow them:
Step 1: Read The Cross Stitch Patterns Chart Properly And Patiently
A cross stitch pattern’s chart is like the heart of a system. It contains all of the information you will need to make the pattern work. So, pay attention to it even if you feel it is boring.
In the chart, you will see some grids and different colored squares. The grids represent the grid on your Aida fabric or any fabric you are working with and each of the colored squares represents one cross stitch. The colors represent the real-life color that is, which color of thread you need to use for that stitch.
Note: As a beginner, start working from the middle of the stitch. Also, if you find it difficult how to read the stitch, please follow this link.
Step 2: Arrange The Fabric
Arrange a suitable fabric for the cross-stitch pattern. Usually, we use the Aida fabric. However, there are a few more options like an even weave or linen. But, for a beginner, I strongly suggest using the Aida fabric. And, before starting to work the stitches, make sure you bind the edges of the fabric to prevent any fraying. You can use a tape mask or sew the edges in a zigzag stitch.
Step 3: Hold The Fabric Tightly On A Embroidery Hoop Or Frame
First, find the center of your fabric. To do it, just fold your fabric in half. Then again fold it in half again. Now, using a pin, mark the center.
Now, using a hoop, hold your fabric tightly. Make sure the center remains in the middle of the hoop. You can use any hoop but remember to use one the size you are comfortable with.
Step 4: Collect And Prepare The Required Thread For The Cross Stitch Pattern
Now, following the chart, you need to collect all the threads in the right color. Then, depending on the requirements of the pattern, separate the thread strands from the floss. Usually, most of the patterns only require one or two strands of thread. Also, do not make it too long or it will get knotted.
Step 5: Thread The Needle
Pinch one of the tails of the thread and insert it into the hole of the needle. Usually, you will find the recommended size with the kit, and for a beginner, you should buy the cross stitch kit. However, if you are not using a kit, then take help from this to find the right size of the needle.
Step 6: Make The Stitches
Now, you will work the cross stitches. You can either work on rows or individually. If you are a beginner and have no idea about the stitches, please, look up how to work the cross stitches here.
Step 7: Trim The Thread
After completing the stitches or when you run out of the thread in the needle, you need to trim it. Make sure you are holding the needle on the back side of the pattern. Then, pass the needle through some of the completed stitches. Make a knot. Make sure the knot is not too tight or too loose. Then carefully trim the thread with sharp scissors.
