  • Crochet Yarn:  medium-thick yarn called worsted weight or size #4 works great for most stars. It’s easy to handle and shows details. Thicker yarn makes stars sturdy for coasters or garlands. This type of yarn is perfect for dainty stars like crochet star earrings. For tiny stars like ornaments, use thin yarn size #3 or sport weight. Glittery or metallic yarn adds sparkle! These yarns shine on holiday decorations!
  • Crochet Hook:  choose a hook size that matches your yarn. For worsted yarn, try a 5mm hook. For thin yarn, use a 3.5mm hook. Metal or plastic hooks both work choose what feels comfy. A good hook keeps stitches even.
  • Scissors:  choose small and sharp scissors while crocheting the star pattern. These types of scissors cut yarn cleanly. Craft scissors with pointed tips are best for snipping tiny ends.
  • Tapestry Needle:  a big-eyed, blunt needle helps weave in yarn tails. No poky tips. For crocheting the star pattern, you choose any type of needle.
  • Stuffing (for 3D stars):  for stuffing, the crochet star patterns are usually suggested to use soft polyester stuffing. These types of stuffing are squishy and washable. Polyester stuffing stays fluffy even after washing. These types of stuffing are great for amigurumi stars.
  • Stitch Markers:  little clips or safety pins help mark stitches so you don’t get lost. Bright colors are easy to spot!
  • Beads, Bells, or Glitter (optional): tiny beads or jingle bells make it festive. Glue-on gems add bling!
  • Measuring Tape (optional):  for crochet star patterns, a flexible tape helps check star size if you need it exact.

Round 1: Crochet The Base Of The Of The Crochet Star Pattern

Start by making a chain of 3. Then, do a slip stitch (SS) into the first chain to create a loop. Alternatively, you can make a magic ring to form the base of your crochet star.

Now, take the hook into chain three, and it is your first double crochet stitch. Do one double stitch into the circle of chain 3. Like that, take the hook into chain two and place double crochet into the circle. This will be your second double crochet stitch.

Repeat this process three or more times. After completing the stitches, do CH 2 and do a slip stitch (SS) into the top of your beginning CH 3. It means you take your crochet hook and insert it into the top of the first chain (CH 3) you made at the start. Then, do a slip stitch (SS) to close the loop or round you’re working on. This helps join the round and keeps your stitches neat.

In this round, you will have 10 double crochet stitches with two spaces and five chains.

Round 2: Do Fpdc Stitches Around The Double Crochet Stitch

Chain 1: don’t count them as stitches. Now, around the beginning of the chain, there are three crochet FPDC stitches and DC stitches next to it. Make one single stitch, one slip stitch, then again crochet a single stitch into the next chaintwo2 spaces. Around every double crochet stitch that you made in round 1, place 1 FPDC stitch.

Then again, in the next chain, two spaces, do one single crochet stitch. 1 slip stitch and one single crochet stitch. Repeat these three more times.

At the top of the beginning of FPDC, do slip stitch(SS). In this round, you will do 10 FPDC with 10 single crochet stitches and five slip stitches.

Round 3: Crochet The Base Of Five Points

In this round, make four chains (CH 4). Then do slip stitch (SS) into the next double crochet (DC), like hooking yarn through and pulling it tight. Nex,t add one single crochet.

Find the small hole (CH 2 space) from the previous round that you made. Put 1 SS there, then add 1 SC in the next stitch. Do this step pattern four total times, and you’ll make five loops total.

SS into the first chain you made to close the shape. Cut yarn, tie a knot, and hide the ends. In this round, you’ll have five loops. 15 slip stitches and 10 single crochets. It’ll look like connected loops with stitches between them.

Round 4: Crochet The Five Points Of The Crochet Star

Start by working in the next chain-4 space (a little hole made by chains). In that space, you’ll make a bunch of stitches:

1. 1 single crochet (tiny stitch),

2. 1 half-double crochet (medium-sized),

3. 1 double crochet (taller stitch),

4. 1 picot (a tiny bump made by chaining three and slipping back),

5. Then go backward: 1 double, one half-double, one single crochet.

Next, in the next regular stitch, add one single crochet. Then, do a slip stitch just slide the hook through in the stitch after that and another single crochet in the next stitch.

Repeat all of this four more times to make the star’s five points! Each repeat adds a new point. Finally, slip the stitch into the top of your first stitch to close the star. Cut the yarn, tie it off, and hide the ends with a yarn needle.

If your stitch counts match (like five picots, 20 single crochets, etc.), you’re on track!
