Want to crochet long stitches and a big warm blanket for the coming cold winter nights? Or, want to wear a lightweight yet cozy shawl to enhance your elegance? Then, you must try this triple crochet stitch (in the US term) or double treble crochet stitch (in the UK term).

Make a foundation ring or foundation chain, chain 3, yarn over once, then yarn over again. Now, insert the crochet hook through the stitch. Now, yarn over again and draw back through the stitch. You will see four loops on your hook at this stage. Now, yarn over once, pull through two of the loops and you will left with 3 loops on the hook. Again, yarn over and pull through two loops, so, you will left with 2 loops on the hook. Finally, yarn over again and pull through the 2 loops. Voila! You make a triple crochet.

Now, I will break down the method to work triple crochet in easy and detailed steps and help you master this crochet stitch. So, let’s read forward!

Key Points:

  • Work triple crochet for long and openwork garments.
  • Chain 3, yarn over twice, pull the hook through the stitch, and drawback the hook through two of the loops. Keep repeating to yarn over once and pull through two loops until there is no loop left on the hook.
  • Select your yarn type cautiously to triple crochet as a beginner.

What Is the Triple Crochet Technique?

Triple crochet, which is also known as double treble crochet in many countries, is a crafting skill of crocheting.

In double crochet, after working the foundation ring, we yarn over once and continue crocheting this way. However, if you need longer openings between the stitches, you can no longer achieve it by double crochet. In such times you have to yarn over twice at the start of the stitches, and this will give you the desired look of stitches. This technique is the triple crochet stitch or triple crochet technique.

What Are The Required Supplies To Work The Triple Crochet?

I have made a list below stating all the materials you will need to work the triple crochet. Let’s take a look!

Name Of The MaterialsFunctions
YarnUse the worsted weight yarn especially if you are new to triple crochet. And, pick a light color for the yarn. It will help you to count the stitches clearly. You can choose any yarn you are comfortable with after you practice the triple crochet stitch for a few times.
Crochet HookGo with a 5.00 mm or 5.5 mm crochet hook. It will help you to make the stitch look perfect in size.
Tapestry NeedleJust use any tapestry needle or blunt tip big needle to weave the edges to attach straps to your project.
ScissorsUse a short all-purpose scissor or a yarn scissor to cut the loose end after you are done.
Stitch MarkersDo you struggle to find the stitches? Then use some stitch markers to keep track of them.

Which Yarn Is Best

While you can work a triple crochet with any yarn, if you’re new to the technique, you should start with the worsted-weight yarn. This yarn has a suitable density, which makes it simpler to see your stitches and count the loops. Paying attention to the amount of loops and yarn overs is critical in triple crochet, and thick or chunky yarn might make it difficult to notice these details clearly.

Similarly, novices may struggle with slippery or silky yarn since it is more difficult to control. So, as a beginner, practice the triple crochet several times using worsted yarn. Once you’re acquainted with the technique, you can use any of your favorites.

How to Triple Crochet?

Triple crochet is neither easy nor tough. You just need to follow some rules and practice a little to become a master of it. And, if you know how to double crochet, you will easily make a triple crochet.

Abbreviations:

  • Ch=chain.
  • Tr = Triple crochet (Double treble crochet in the UK term).

Step 1: Chain 3 From the Foundation

How to Triple Crochet

Make a foundation ring and ch 3 from it. However, if you use a very lightweight yarn like cotton, work ch 5, and for medium-weight yarn like worsted yarn, work ch 4.

Step 2: Yarn Over Once and Again

After making the chain, yarn over twice with the crochet hook like the above picture.

Step 3: Insert Your Hook Through the Stitch (Chain 3 or Chain 4 or Chain 5 From Your Crochet Hook)

How to Triple Crochet

Now, insert the hook into the stitch. Remember, you will insert it into the ch from your crochet hook based on the initial ch number in step 1.

Step 4: Yarn Over Again

How to Triple Crochet

Yarn over while the crochet hook is still inserted into the chain.

Step 5: Pull Over Through the Stitch

How to Triple Crochet

Pull over or draw back the hook through the stitch as shown in the above picture.

Step 6: Count Your Loops

At this stage, you will have 4 loops on the hooks. If the count is not 4, then you must make some mistakes in the previous steps. Thus, matching the count to 4 is very important.

Step 7: Yarn Over the Hook

Yarn over once while there are 4 loops on the crochet hook.

Step 8: Draw The Crochet Hook Back Through the First Two loops

Now, pull the hook through the first two loops from the hook.

After you draw back the hook through 2 of the loops, you will left with 2 loops on the crochet hook.

Step 10: Yarn Over and Draw Back the Hook Through 2 loops

Again yarn over once and draw the hook through the first two loops on the hook.

Step 11: Count The Loops on the Hook Again

How to Triple Crochet

At this stage, count the loops on the crochet hook again. Make sure that there are only 2 loops left on the hook.

Step 12: Yarn Over and Pull the Crochet Hook Through The last 2 Loops

In a treble crochet scarf, you can work with any type of stitch. You need a starting chain that is three chains longer than the number of stitches you plan to work. The turning chain is not counted as a stitch.

In this scarf, I used a chain 18. You need to start your first treble crochet in the fourth chain from the hook. You’ll end up with 15 stitches in the row. At the end, you need to crochet a chain of 3 and turn your work. Then, tr in each st across, ch 3, turn. Repeat this until you get your desired length. Fasten off the yarn and trim the yarn.

We have come to an end finally! Let’s go through the process again.
